Flexible workers provide benefits for clients

The European Union has proposed a new set of guidelines for labour reform in the member states but the ARC is concerned that the EU agency workers’ guidelines depict contractors and freelancers in a negative light.

Of particular concern to the Association is European Union Guideline 7 of the strategy for smart and sustainable growth which suggests there is a link between “precarious” employment and the use of contractors.

The ARC says that this paints a negative picture of limited company contractors whereas in truth they can play a very valuable contribution towards the economic recovery.

A spokesman from ARC stated that freelancers provide both workers and industry with the flexibility it requires whilst the AWR will ensure that they receive basic employment rights within their temporary workplace.

In a statement, the Association has confirmed that it is supporting proposals from the European Confederation of Private Employment Agencies (Eurociett) calling for Guideline No. 7 to be amended.

There are currently around 1.4 million freelancers, many of those who work through umbrella companies, in the UK and they make an essential contribution to the UK economy.
